NEW HARRIS TEETER OPENS!....STARBUCKS MISSING?
This week the long awaited Harris Teeter opened to a warm reception. It's just like any other Harris Teeter, but about 60% size. They packed in all the things you expect from your local store, just less of it.
One thing that is clearly missing is Starbucks coffee. We were not completely surprised that they couldn't fit a little Starbucks in (they do at HT Fresh Fields in Kiawah), but no coffee at all?
However, the new store is beautiful and the great renovations to the entire Island Center have further elevated Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms and Wild Dunes. The new energy has inspired three new food based tenants; Pizza Hut, Bushido Japanese, Yobe Yogurt.
It was sad to see the old local Red & White go, but the new Harris Teeter is a wonderful alternative.

Out with the old and in with the new is sometimes a difficult transition. So it was when emotions ran high late last year when the lease for the Red & White Market on the Isle of Palms was not renewed and a fourth generation staple for the island closed. Land owners “The Beach Company” said banks would not lend for a major shopping center renovation without a big name anchoring project.
In its place, the revitalized center on Palm Blvd will feature only the second Newton Farms (a subsidiary of Piggly Wiggly (See Update: "Piggly Wiggly Sold"). The original is located on Kiawah Island. Self labeled as an “Extraordinary Market”, Newton Farms offers both natural and organic foods and well as general grocery items.
In March we drove over to Kiawah Island to tour HGTV’s Dream Home. (COSTAL LIVING Magazine is hosting Showhouse 2013 on Daniel Island this summer). At the crossroads of Kiawah and Seabrook Islands sits Freshfields Village Center the home of Newton Farms first location. We decided to stop and see what Newton Farms had to offer.
The market offerings were many and included high quality meats and poultry, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and seafood. A fine selection wine, gourmet prepared food, a bakery, deli, and fresh cut flowers too. But that’s not all. If all goes as planned just as on Kiawah, the new IOP grocery store will include a Starbucks Coffee & Cafe!
With vacation and residential property sales and prices on the move in Wild Dunes, Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, it’s no wonder that Piggly Wiggly, has taken the opportunity to develop its Newton Farm brand on the Isle of Palms. Newton Farms is scheduled to open in 2014.
Until completed the island does not have a full service grocery store. Limited groceries are available at the Isle of Palms Marina Store, Simmons Seafood, the Kangaroo Gas Station, and Hudson's Market in Wild Dunes.
Three grocery stores are available in nearby Mount Pleasant. Two just over the IOP Connector include Piggly Wiggly and Target in the Seaside Farms shopping center. The other is Publix located just over the Sullivan's Island bridge on Coleman Blvd. on the left. Prevent frustration and avoid beach traffic across the bridges between 3pm-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Piggly Wiggly Selling Stores
The Piggly Wiggly brand will soon be no more. The Charleston-based retailer on Thursday announced plans to sell 29 Piggly Wiggly stores to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter. The Pig will sell six locations, plus the [Newton Farms Market] store under construction on Isle of Palms & Kiawah Island, to Harris Teeter. Twenty two other stores will be sold to Greenville-based BI-LO.

Harris Teeter is now going to be on Isle of Palms, SC
Harris Teeter to open Spring of 2014 on the Isle of Palms, SC. Once proposed to be a Newton Farms, a division of Piggly Wiggly, is now a Harris Teeter. The family-run business also is selling seven Charleston-area stores to Harris Teeter, which is in the process of being sold to Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.
