About...

James Island is probably Charleston’s most eclectic Island, its home to locals, students, outdoorsman, and the affluent.  This mostly residential community is perfectly surrounded by the city-Charleston, the retail-West Ashley, the rural-Johns Island, and the beach-Folly.  While it wouldn’t be obvious during a short visit, James Island has a long history.  In 1861 Confederate troops took to Fort Johnson on the northern tip of the island, across from Sullivan’s Island to fight Union forces.  James Island remained largely rural until the 1960s but has since grown to be a desirable residential area.  Since its completion, the James Island connector has encouraged residential development, making the trip to downtown Charleston a matter of minutes. 

James Island has eight (8) highly rated schools that include one (1) High School, two (2) Middle Schools, and five (5) Elementary Schools.  James Island real estate is diverse enough to appeal to a wide range of buyers.  Both a younger generation and business professionals have come to call James Island home, as newer condominiums and townhouse developments in close proximity to MUSC, the College of Charleston, and the beach make for an ideal location.  However, with neighborhoods residing along tidal creeks, marshlands, and the Charleston harbor, there are plenty of single-family, deepwater, and luxury homes popular with families and retirees.  James Island is an ideal homeowner’s location for outdoor escape, offering activities such as kayaking, fishing, and boating support the active lifestyle enjoyed by many residents.
